I was born in 1966 in Granite City, Illinois, a steel town in the industrial Midwest. As I grew up during the 1970's and 1980's, however, the number of steel mills in town dwindled dramatically. After graduating from Granite City High School in 1984, I went off to college at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I graduated from the U of I in 1988 and went to Cornell Law School in the fall of that year. Despite my best attempts, I was unable to secure a full-time job by the time that I graduated from Cornell in May 1991. At that time, I moved to Chicago to live in a four bedroom apartment with my brother, Richard Hagen, and two other college students. Even though I spent much of my time studying for the bar that summer, it was still a memorable summer. The Chicago Bulls had just won their first NBA championship, and it was an exciting time to be living in Chicago, which I enjoyed exploring. Eventually, I was hired by an administrative law judge working for the U.S. Department of Education in Washington, D.C., and I reluctantly left Chicago for Washington in June 1992. I worked there from July 1992 to June 1999. During that time, I also started learning about the Internet and developing various web sites, such as the Washington, DC Registry. Due to the lack of good web site software, I started developing software for these web sites. Other sites expressed interest in licensing this software as well, and I realized that I was fulfilling an important need in the market. By June of 1999, this software was selling so well that I decided that it was time to leave the Department of Education to focus my full-time efforts on the software business. Hagen Software Inc. was incorporated in July 1999, and we have been growing since that time.
In addition to surfing the Net and otherwise fooling around on computers, I enjoy playing the saxophone, running, tennis, movies, and dining out.
